Day 82 June 18th

When we decided to leave for the ride up the Dalton we were a little concerned about the rain forecast. Took a chance which worked out fine yesterday. It started raining just before we got to Wiseman and it rained all night long. The Dalton can get very muddy on the dirt sections in rain. We decided to not finish riding up the HWY since it had been raining all night and forecast was now calling for rain for next two days. That would have meant fighting the mud the rest of the way up and all the way back off of the HWY. Rain also would have prevented seeing most of the scenery. So we rode all the way back to Fairbanks in rain and road was not much fun with all the mud.
We stopped at a food place almost at the south end of the HWY for a snack and saw a black bear there. One of the guys scared it off with a couple of warning shots. It took three to get the bears attention.
Bikes were a mess after todays ride.
287 miles today.

  1. Dave - if the weather gets better, are you going to try the haul road again?

I don't think we will go again. We were on the best half of the road for scenery and don't want to do the 280 miles from Fairbanks to get back to where we stopped. Got above the Arctic Circle. Only part I miss not doing is the picture at Arctic Ocean.
